sh3creates was started by Joy, a self taught artist. Learn more about the inspiration behind sh3creates' artwork.
How did sh3creates come to be?
I have always had a strong passion for art from a young age. I first started off doing paintings and drawings and then I found an interest in digital art. I loved the idea of my drawings coming to life digitally. I then focused on starting a business and creating prints of my artwork to showcase to the world.
Inspiration behind the name?
The name sh3creates reflects my ability to express and create art freely.
Walk us through your creative process! How do you determine what to draw/what colours to use etc?
My work is centred on contemporary visuals and abstract art. I also incorporate Black identity and influences such as afro hair. I love to shift between vibrant colour palettes to a simple black and white theme.
What is your favourite art print? And why?
One of my favourite works I created is ' Afro Puff'. It's a simple piece, yet it tells a story about afro hair. Our hair is not just an accessory. Our hair holds significant symbolism to our culture and heritage.
Greatest accomplishments and challenges as a business so far?
Seeing my art reach people all around the world has been a huge accomplishment for me. In terms of challenges, sometimes I can experience a creative block. However, I don’t let it get to me! When I’m experiencing a creative block, something that really helps is creating a mood board. This helps me to get more inspiration as a mood board has an array of designs. From there I can narrow down my thoughts into creating another piece.
What does it mean to you to be Black owned business?
Being a Black owned business is important to me, as it signifies me being an artist/business owner and a proud Black one!
Any advice for Black creatives or entrepreneurs?
Advice I would give to a Black creative/entrepreneur would be to never underestimate the skills and abilities you have. Don't be afraid to come out of your comfort zone. Not only to show the world your essence but also to show yourself what you're capable of!
